I collected police for a while. I started in 1969. I have never heard the black band story regarding specific use by a police regt. Any references, or regulations? The green piping is standard Schutzpolizei green.

I have seen such a cap fitted with SS insignia, i.e.; clearly police green body with black cap band but never with police insignia. I believe it was piped in white however; and appeared to be an SS cap made with police wool out of necessity rather than a unit specific item.

There are certainly NO police regulations for such a cap. I cannot speak to the SS as I was a collector of civil police only. I have also never heard of any other unit having a specific cap made up under contract just for their use. It seems that this might have not been allowed by the regulations guys back at their desks in Berlin.

That said, the cap certainly looks like a contract made police NCO cap, although I have never seen that particular color of interior. I have no alternative explanation other than post 1942 justiz, that did wear green piped caps with black bands, albeit with a different shade of green specified in regulations.

Personally, without any regulation or order to back the hypothesis I would be inclined to see the cap as a Justiz visor made with police cloth, perhaps due to the lack of proper color later in the war.


Just my 2 cents, maybe 1.5 cents worth.

A very nice visor IMO. From those Himmler-years when the distinction between the police and SS was very blurred.

Thanks for the input. It is definitely not a converted Justice visor as its made in Polizei wool and has Polizei ventilation grommets. It is right as rain based on materials and construction and has not been rebanded for WSS Polizei Division use.

It was clearly constructed like this and to make it more mysterious it is a contract cap...Maybe a run of these were ordered for the Polizei Division when it was formed? Their Polizei collar litzen for their battle uniforms were also non typical as the Polizei litzen in Polizei green backing were subdued...non shiny for field use...
So Polizei items were modified for this Division. Their head gear was a hodgepodge of army-polizei pieces, modified...field gray with Polizei insignia or plain Polizei wool caps but worn with field gray tunics with poizei insignia.
Officers Polizei collar patches with added branch farbe like the Polizei artillery Regiment using added red artillery soutache on their collar tabs and Polizei caps!
