Looks okay to me, given the weird nature of the buttons I get the feeling they are period and were of some significant purpose to the owner.

I believe many put a sturdier button that they can open the cap flaps with a gloved hand in the COLDEST OF WEATHER...Billbert

Period pix show soldiers personalizing their uniforms all the time.... not a big issue. Looks like a good piece.
