    Period KM tropical cap image

Interesting image that I lifted from the web.
KM soldier wearing a tropical cap with a KM yellow eagle and metal cockade...
Perhaps its an army cap that he wanted to look less army ?
So adding a yellow KM + metal cockade... The eagle looks too big to be an army cap eagle,
but I don't thing it's large enough to be a breast eagle... Thoughts?

The eagle can be guessestimated in proportion to the diameter of the cockade.

          Nick,

It is more than likely a Kriegsmarine cap as well as they were of the same design. As for the eagle, definitely a breast eagle to me. Why would this sailor change out the eagle? Only he could answer that. The cockade reminds me of a officers panzer cap that had the issue tropical cockade replaced with the metal cockade from a visor; the cap has been shown on this forum along with a photo of the original German owner wearing it during the war. A personalisation thing most likely.

Another possibility for the cap in the photo, a privately made example in the design of issue pieces with these pieces of insignia the only ones available. This is purely a guess though.

It could be a Luftwaffe tropical M41 billed cap that he has adapted to a KM version.

I know it sounds impossible but keep in mind that the KM were the last to get a billed tropical cap in 1942.

Also look at the contrast in hues of the sand-yellow cap verses the brand new sand-khaki KM tropical uniform.

Could explain the metal cockade too. Possibly even a privately made billed tropical cap, originally aimed at the LW or KM market,

Tailor or privately made KM cap with improvised insignia. Nice photo Nick

If my memory doesn't fail, according to K. Patzwall's survey DIE KOPFBEDECKUNGEN DER KRIEGSMARINE: 1919 - 1945, tropical KM billed caps at first had a metal cockade and a metal eagle that were soon replaced by specific BEVo/woven ones. I assume that early metal insignia, since movable, might have been easily swapped with fancier ones of different quality (ie the improvised insignia Tim O'Keefe has mentioned).
