      Hi Keith,

Personally I would be very careful with these black lining PZ side caps, more pictures would be helpful.

Many were dyed black as they had shortages during the Blitzkrieg as the manpower grew so fast.
I have its twin with black lining like this! (previous owner did not know about this practice and wanted a standard black one...
To dye a real field gray one back in post war years could have happened but somewhat unlikely IMO.
Btw often with regular green backed insignia reapplied on black wool!

That may very well be. But when? I really like all 4 components of the cap.

Who knows...I know at one time they dyed green wool assault wrappers black, as black Pz wrappers were more desirable to collectors.

It does look believable though as mentioned.

Do the air vents indicate the original colour? As one is corroded but the other retains its black paint (see lower image, post2). If it were a dyed field grey cap wouldn't the vent be painted field grey?

More of the Cavalry cap...1940 date and maker, note the roundel is on green not black, was this common practice? Is it Cavalry or Signals?

                        Thank you for looking, Keith

The 2nd is Panzer Reconnaissance cap with golden yellow soutache, but I'm not sure with the eagle.
Green applied insignias are common to see on Panzer overseas caps.

                          Here are mine:
