To answer your trap question, there is no gold metallic officer's trapezoid that I have ever seen. Since generals could do as they mostly please most any insignia could appear on their caps. If one wanted gold then he could easily do as Bayerlein did and wear a metal eagle. From these photos I'm not leaning towards the cap being original as the interior wear looks somewhat contrived. A hands-on inspection would be needed.
