Cavalry units wore a yellow-gold piping.

So what does that mean? Would it have been dyed? If so why?

I took these photos in the sunlight.
It looks to me like it was yellow piping dyed black.
The dye appears to me to have been done a long while ago.
        Here are the photos.
Also the blue/grey of the hat itself is faded.
I did not take photos but you can see behind the cap eagle the original brighter colour.
I am wondering if the Trooper transferred and dyed the hat piping at that time.
In other words maybe he was originally in the Cavalry and the cap originally a Cavalry cap.
Then later he moved to combat engineers and dyed it?
        Would that make sense?
I know the original owner had the hat for quite some time.
It was an elderly woman so I am fairly certain she did not mess

          piping

It appears the piping was re-colored and if black was used it was not well done, perhaps with a felt-tip pen. But I think it was not likely done during the war and it's anybody's guess when it was done. For me it is a ruined cav. hat.
