    Restoring a Rural Police Shako

    Hi Fellas,
I thought I 'd post a little project to restore a rare Police Officers Rural Shako that I picked up off the stand a couple of weeks ago. Its not quite finished yet just need to cut back the front visor and lacquer it so might as well post it now as there won't be of a difference .
Basically this was a pretty much unissued Officers Shako made by EREL that had issues, the original cockade had been replaced with a Federal cockade and the front visor had suffered and lost half of its brown paint finish
I thought I can't let this one pass me by and the price required for it very fair IMHO so never one to be deterred I bought it ...I found a suitable cockade and set about painting the visor mixing & using satin and gloss modelling paint which after some experimentation cost me roughly £10.00.
I built up the paint round the existing finish until it was level and then added more paint which I then cut back using using wet and dry sand paper, when that was done I added the top coat, this just needs a little sanding and satin varnish and job done.
    I would appreciate your comments

    Thanks in advance

    Bob

I'll post the pictures of the shako as I bought it and then as it looks now

I think it brings down the value of an original shako.

Its not always about the money,I wouldn't want to pay the price for a mint untouched one as its not top of my wants list, but the opportunity arose to own one at a very reasonable price and I know my own abilities so I went for it.
It will display very nicely with my near mint municipal shako and to me that's all that matters
                  thank you for your thoughts

I think it cost you more than that, as i think you devalued that shako.

Now its just a shako with a postwar paint job...

But hey, as long you are happy

Edit: although, it looks pretty good...
