    100% original with removed soutache (and obvious removed eagle).
    The opened up rear with added piece of cloth is common and the method used to increase the size.
    If you look along the line of the removed soutache, you may find a piece still tucked between the bill and the body.
    Looking at the features and construction I believe that the maker is most likely Lago.

      Nice sun bleached original M40 cap

      Looks like the cockade is been tacked back on with black thread?, hard to tell via my Iphone

      I would leave it as it is and not reapply the eagle, espically if the cap from your POW find

            Hello Walther,

            I did notice the holes but it isn't easy to make out what may have been there. There does appear to be a 'clean' area around the holes but I don't think that it was a skull.
            Did you take a look for soutache remains?
