    M34 Heer Overseas Cap

    Hello,

I am working on an early war kit of a Landser from 1937. While at the SOS I will be looking for a number of things but an M34 is on the top of my list. By 1937 The insignia on the hat was a white eagle on dark bluish green background and a roundel mounted on the same. A branch of service soutauche was also used. I have the insignia and application of the insignia down, I need some information on the construction of the cap itself. Material used as the lining, shape and material of grommets.... What do I really need to look at and look for?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks again.

            Hello,

Brass grommets were acceptable in early hats?

Yes ..seen fairly often Fred...37 the quality of feldgrau can be almost puffy on occasion..sometimes almost a blue green cast to the shade ..Billbert

Many can also be unit marked..MANY have evidence of safety pin jaunty up to top closure...most all will be hand sewn except for soutache..

The grommets in early M34 sidecaps i.e. 1936 & 1937 can be brass or magnetic steel/ tin with a brass/ gilt coating over it. Both types had a field-grey finish on the outside.

The grommets in Glen's 1937 dated cap, post number 3 look to be brass

Where as the grommets in jmcm's 1936 dated cap, post number 7 look to be steel/ tin with brass/ gilt coating that has worn through on the high points.

The Germans used both types of grommets in the period 1935 to 1937. It all depended on what each cap maker used or had on hand. The brass/ gilt coated magnetic type seem to be the most frequently encountered type in remaining early dated caps today,
