    DAK sidecap

    Hi Guys

I just wanted to check this cap out- I got it cheap and believe the base cap is genuine but was stripped in the past of its insignia and original grommets- these having been crudely replaced and new genuine insignia applied.

It is a Clemens Wagner and interestingly has the rarer maker mark with just Braunschweig as factory location. Dated Jan 43.

    Many thanks

    Patrick

Hi looks to me that you have summed it up pretty much correctly, insignia looks legit but reapplied.

I sold a similar cap for £200 recently but not that one, it had normal grommets.

            fake cap

I should add that what's wrong the cap, based on your photos
Incorrect red liner and the grommets, are found on Chinese fakes, amongst others who make repo caps

Need a clear photo of the makers stamp to be sure. Its either a common CW fake or an original that thas been stripped for its parts (& since re-applied) to create a fake M40 ? What is the spelling on the stamped "Braunschweig" ?

Braunschweig is the location of the larger CW factory for tropical caps. More types of tropical caps came from Braunschweig than Hamburg the smaller of the two CW sites. The Braunschweig CW tropical sidecaps have been faked for many years. However the Braunschweig is mispelled on the fakes....

                Hi Guys

Thanks for the comments- the stamp is pretty faint so it's really hard to make out the Braunschweig lettering but looking at it very closely from the traces I can see it appears to be the correct spelling- Tim, what is the typo on the fakes?

Here are some more pictures that may help...

Thanks for the added pics. Your cap is ok but with recently applied insignia. Sadly has been stripped of its original insignia and grommets. They were used to help disguise a fake M40 no doubt. The Braunschweig fake has two letters missing, as the original stamp was over the center crease that it was copied from.
