Truppen Sonderdienst Visor

Thanks guys for your positive feedback.... this is just one of 6 pieces of head gear he brought back; this is the only visor. He also brought back 2 enlisted OS (black panzer and smoke troop), M40 SD Q64 helmet, M43 Officers Bergmutze, and a Siemens Pilot helmet.

I would be interested to learn how often other members have seen this type of very rare "core-spun" piping on the visor hat of this thread and Ron's visor in the linked thread below

Chris - my eyes are not what they used to be but this piping looks to be rayon. Here a few closer views of the piping. Please let me know what you think.

The piping is definitely pre-May 1945. It is an ersatz pressed into production during the war probably because of shortages. The question for me is what year did it first appear ?

Another interesting point about Dan's visor the subject of this thread, it also has a later war non-bullion chin-cord made from rayon ? art. silk ? or other type of Cellulose product ?

Just to do nothing wrong to someone and given that it is time to memories, I think that it is appropriate to provide some information also on the topic of the Special Services’ Officers (TSD). This also because some friends have rightly observed that it would be time to re-examine some old threads, now fallen into oblivion, enabling the new members to known them. In addition, in this specific case, the confusion between the light-blue (hellblau) of the transport troops (and subsequently also other troops, listing that it would take too long time & space here), the cornflower-blue (Kornblumenblau) of the medical units and the light-blue (but actually a distinct and lively color, quite similar to the electric-blue) of the Administrative Branch of the TSD (defined in the collectors’ world as sky-blue, dragon-blue, royal-blue, etc.) continues to occur. Finally, my purpose is to remember, first of all to myself, the need for coordination with the fellow collectors of the uniforms & insignia section. I thank all the WAF friends collectors of which I point here under the links to their magnificent specimens and I apologize to the many others I have not mentioned:

The TSD was established in January 1944, using some officials, whose was given the full status of officers. The TSD was divided into two branches:
- Administrative Corps, which were assigned in the spring of 1944 the officials of the top and superior careers of the Intendanturdienst and the non-technical officials of the Verwaltungs-Zahlmeisterdienst.
Their new ranks started from Zahlmeister (equivalent to a 2nd lieutenant) to Generalstabsintendant.

Branch color: light-blue
Metal device: a caduceus, 2.5 cm. long
- Judicial Corps, whose new ranks started from Stabsrichter (equivalent to captain) to Generaloberstabsrichter, Rudolf Lehmann being the only in this charge from May, 1944 to May, 1945.
Branch color: wine-red
Metal device: a sword, cm. 2.6 long.

I have found a photo that I had to manipulate to show this image which I believe is the TruppenSonderdienst visor in wear in 1945.


Photo - these are the men of I Company, 345th Infantry Regiment of the 87th Infantry Division. My father is to the right of SSGT Mike Yaramishyn who is wearing the visor. Mike and my Dad were foxhole buddies and best friends for the remainder of their lives.

Not so sure - but maybe? Could very well be - but the poor resolution of the image leaves much to the imagination. You know the history, and have the pics - so we have to trust what we see is certainly that which we are told. But in the end, who cares - it is an awesome cap.
