    Black Panzer EM O/S Hat

Here is a hat marked "F40" size 57.

It never had a soutache. Note one of the grommets has pulled part way through the liner.

Markings are hard to make out but as best I can make out:

Is it possible to have a close and clear wiew of the grommet inside ?
And no evidence of a soutache checking behind the reverse of the flap ?

Basic hat looks OK to me, with evidence of a removed ‘soutach’ (replaced insignia??).

I have opened the flaps and there is no evidence of a removed soutache.

Are the eagle and cockade replaced? Does not look so to me.

I concur with Singer and would add that you won't always find a piece of the soutache or thread left behind but there would be actual holes in the cap for it....you can practically trace its path on each side of the (replaced) cockade....so it appears in your pix. An F40 sidecap would have had it....pink panzer or yellow gold recon.

My eyesight is not what it used to be. Upon closer examination in sunlight I see a break in the bottom edge stitching on each side of the cockade.

That must be what others are seeing and it could indicate the presence of a long gone soutache.
