That is an Austrian M08 summer forage cap, not a 'field made' cap at all in my opinion. The early Nazi storm troopers wore those with the wind jacket. It is missing its liner and a forehead sweatband has been stitched in. Interesting cap.

        Robt.

Hm... but then i think it was used in 2 wars...
Because the cap is faded, but under the edelweiss the color is not faded.
          Just sligthly visible

Quite possibly as the frugal Germans seldom throw anything away. A nice civilian alpine cap post war (?). There was a Kaiser Karl badge on the front or possibly a rosette at one time...you can see the holes. Also, it appears the cloth sweatband goes around the entire circumference. May have been used in WWII by GJ as you suggest too...the right over left flap indicate Austrian made however, the working buttonholes with corozo nut buttons differ from the typical Hitlermutze as it was referred to back in the early days.

            Robt.
