I think you should check the picture of the wearer and see if everything match...

Start there first...and let us know what you see.

Thanks for the reply, it looks exactly the same... Even signs of the way it was shaped. It looks like the edge of the insignia caught a bit more light in the picture but for sure I cant see anything different.

Any other ideas? Its been all positive so far!

          Chris,

Don't worry so much about house clearances, estate sales ect..

I would be asking for a large scanned image of that period portrait and a clear HD photo of the cap (front on) as well as a nice clear pic of the Insignia only,
if the quality of that "period photo" is good and clear there will be signs were you can connect some dots hopefully. (Trap insignia area Im talking)

              Hello,

Indeed I do trouble myself with groupings - here in Germany its not often to find one single item during a house clearance. I just am not used to seeing such minty Items like that Cap. Normally the items are in the attic and have had bad storage mostly forgotten. But this was taken care of - normally I know my visors etc well but this is a first cap of this sort hence the post.

I know the guy quite well who is selling it.

I suppose its harder for someone in the US or outside Europe to imagine the things we find on a daily basis. I have personally found many groupings and sold them as such. Things that many would dismiss as belonging together. When you find it with your own to hands it must be taken at face value they belong together. I have no reason to doubt they belong together if the cap is real, the photo was added to sell the cap is for me nonsense, as the price is very good.

The discussion on whether it was real or not is my main concern, the pictures I have received of both items confirm it is the same cap in wear.

But I wanted to be sure the cap itself was not a fake modeled on the picture itself.

I near 400 views on the thread yet only three guys had something to add... I take this as a good sign as normally fakes dont last long on here.

I have a guarantee with the cap he said he would give me every penny back if it was proved to be fake.

I have never once gotten a bad item or grouping from him.

I had it now in my hands and can clearly see its old, not aged artificially. It has that musty smell one would expect from it.

The cap is not one I would normally feel comfortable with. The wool does not seem to be period wool in my opinion. However, I must admit that it does resemble the cap in the photo.

                        Hi Guys,

Thanks again for all your input.

I called him today and will go over and get it, so all the decent pictures I will be able to take when I get back in tonight.

He has told me if it outed as a fake he will give me my money back, ( he was rather shocked when I asked him this as I never asked him before) but I am sure he found it as he does clearances in my town and he is not really that interested in Militaria. He always calls me when he has found something. He had a few nice peices of headgear that he got over the years, most of it I ended up buying and when not me the US soldiers stationed here took them.

That said, I have bought some very nice items from him, all mostly salty but original.

                        Regards from a sunny Bayern!

The buttons look much closer together in the period photo.

Hard to say...in any case it is not that cap i would have as a GJ textbook. Maybe the cap itself is an original one, who know..!

                              Hello Everyone,

Sorry for the wait, the picture is way to fuzzy to work out if its the one, it looks like it but I can be 100% sure.

The question is the Cap real? It may not b textbook, but is it real?

All picture requests I can do!
