Never seen this variant of headgear for the Gendarmerie, but I like it like cloth, manufacturing and interior, very similar to some Bergmutze that I saw for the Gendarmerie.
For proper evaluation would take photos in detail.

Looks like the visor was removed

I agree. I have seen police M42's - I have an officers one - but this looks like it had the brim removed.

I think the cap body is original, though.
