    Thanks alot Robt. Of course your right, Johannes is the key player in this unique cache. Appreciate you taking the time to give him the recognition he deserves in this important discovery. As i have not met him, if you see him ask him for the story ?

      There was an early thread on this subject which had some photos of the "Bee hive" find. These images showed bundles of caps, some web belts and a tie made from the caps/ tunics which had already been cut up to be used as insulation inside the hives.

      Can anyone find that thread ? May be it was on the German Daggers forum ?

      Whoever posted that image of a mans tie made from the cut up tropical caps had images of the find. To my knowledge these are the only photos to ever surface so far.

        Story I heard is that most of the beehive caps were a very small size. Certainly my example is a puny 53.

              Glen cap has correct insignia application for a Clemens Wagner cap, eagles were hand stitched

                Also incorrect, while most were smaller sizes there were many medium & large size as well size 57, 59 & 60 for example.

                & Agree with Mark, Clemens Wagner has a very distictive eagle handsewn application demonstrated by Glen's fine example of an untouched original without soutache. Of all the different makers found in the cache, not only the CW's are hand stitched but some of the LAGO's and the few caps that do not have makers marks also are all hand stitched eagles. The Hans Brandt & Weissbach's have machine applied eagles.

                Have seen a couple felllows wearing the ties made up from the beehive scaps at the shows once in awhile. Tried to get them to sell but they won't budge.

                    I have mentioned this on another thread but when I visited Holland in 1983 I saw bundles of DAK overseas caps at a store near Den Haag. They had red lining but I do not know the maker etc. these were all unissued and did not have piping. I also spoke to a US Vet who saw a large depot full of tropical items in Italy. he remembered 100s of pith helmets and and canvas foot wear etc. There must have been very large numbers of tropical items made on contract and never shipped or used.

                                Giorgio, thank you for posting those photos. Such a bundle is now a collector classic in its own right. I wonder how many still remain in the world today. Still all tied together like that.

                                Is there any chance you might still have images of some of the other caps or bundles of caps from this cache that have passed through your hands. Would it be possible to post them on this thread ?

                                It would make for a very interesting reference on the subject.
