I've seen this stamp in several known fakes (including one I have) and also a few questionable ones. Just to be clear are there any known originals with this stamp or is it an automatic death sentence in all cases?

Many fakes use the stamp of known makers. The Collector's Guild cap is probably a good one.

This is an excepted and well known maker with lots of tropical caps in collectors hands today. This thread has several original sidecaps from this maker with the similar stamp...post # 82 & 84 specifically show a few with the white soutache originally applied. (its a great thread from start to finish by the way). However the size 60 box 21 stamp has been seen as a fake by many collectors. As Mr Singer & OSS have mentioned, the original stamp is different than from the threadstarter.

The LAGO cap on CG is 100% genuine.

I've got no doubts that the cap that started this thread is a reproduction. It is also very interesting to note that it is currently being sold as a such.
