A case like this is exactly the purpose of restoration.
What is the use of a flattened cap with no insignia?
Now it can be displayed and this history behind it shared.

      A wonderful find... very lucky!

Very good work, you really transformed this into a beaty.
          Thank you for this info.

You've done a fine job of restoration.

As you said, there is only so much you can do with an extremely bent, creased or broken pasteboard as with the one in this cap.

Personally however, I would never recommend hot water, it can cause lots of problems especially if it splashes on old leather which will shrivel up and turn hard within minutes. Trying to rapidly dry out antique fabrics with hair dryers on hot settings etc is also not a good idea, better to let them air dry.

Just some suggestions based from experience and not meant as criticisms at all. It's a pleasure to see this successful restoration but I just worry about others trying to do the same with hot water and modern cleaning agents etc.
            Please don't attempt it yourself.
