Not up on my early SS headgear but this piece is up for sale at an auction company. I wanted to ask the members here if my feelings are correct that this is just a piece of junk?

Michael, your gut is 100% correct--it is a Frankenstein (note the LW-Lago lining!).

I believe there is one from the John Pepara Collection for sale in the current HH auction.
