Another unissued 2nd pattern tropenhelm, not Afrikan, but these were used on the Sud Front.

Is there really any proof of that Tim? I can't recall ever seeing a photo of one of these in wear. I thought I had many years ago, but when I finally saw a larger clearer version of it, it was definitely a first pattern. It was an awards ceremony or something like that with Rommel.

Obviously most of these sat out the war in a warehouse somewhere, with the bulk of them coming to the U.S. afterward.

There is a great color photo often said to be from Afrika (mistakenly) but is in fact from Italy'43 showing an MG crew in a rocky location, one crewman is wearing a faded 1st pattern and the other fellow is wearing the felt 2nd model. Lt Col A J Barker's book "Afrikakorps" has this photo on page # 76.

I found the pic, Tim! Thanks! And I know I have seen it before years ago. I must have been more interested in the MG 34, because I don't remember the 2nd pattern tropenhelm at all!!!
