      Just 2 observations :
Your M42 sidecap looks to have no grommets, or have they been removed ?
AFIK, regular produced M42 sidacaps always had some.
And this pattern of insignias with dark green backing is not supposed to be factory applied on M42 sidacaps.

Then it is probably a fake, sorry.
I don't think it is a private tailor made one.

            M42

There appears to be small rips or imperfections across from each other. Could someone have removed them. I understand you say they don't have them, but did they ever have them?

Not sure how anyone can judge these hats based on these photos..Post bigger and closer photos.

Kind of odd that they all show similar damage.

                they are all different purchased.
i love the barn look. the holes are moth holes.
I took the 42 self from an attic. hey was from an old German who
fought in the war. Therefore, I think this is homemade/fieldmade.
i wil send some more pictures as soon as possibile

One can observe a grommet hole on the interior shot of M42 and M42s were certainly delivered with dark green backed insignia. Larger/better photos would help.

Yes Mr Davis, that's why i asked if grommets could have been removed; it should then let evidence of the previous holes and repairs visible at this specific area.
If so, the sidecap could be ok.
But as previously mentioned, i doubt it is home made/field made.
For insignias, with dark green backing, i think they were not supposed to be factory applied on M42 sidacaps, as they were replaced by insignias with feldgrau backing for camouflage purpose, at least acording official regs: june 4th, 1940, HVBI, Teil B, Ziff 337.
Already made eagles and cocardes were supposed to be used, untill the end of avaible quantities, only for Ersatzheer.
And the M42 Feldmütze were only produced later, from july 1942.
Of course, like often in reality, those regulations order were far to be followed by manufacturers, and all avaible insignias were used.
Your nice exemple of M42 illustrate this practice of appliation of the eagle over the cocarde, like this one too (feldgrau backing) :
