    1st Patter Luft Cap Eagle

Looking for opinions on this cap eagle. Do you think it's a good fit for my visor?

Well, you have to line up the pin holes.
And then what is the date in the cap? 1937-38 was the transitional period for the change to the 2nd pattern eagle.

        It's marked 1938

It would be technically incorrect for this eagle to be on a 1938 dated visor but the reality is that they were affixed to caps well after 1937.

Actually my cap is dated 1939 I stand corrected. Here is the eagle that came with it (I assume it belongs). Only reason why I was asking was because another member felt an earlier eagle would be more appropriate.

Should I try and upgrade the eagle (brown spots are a little distracting) or leave as it?

              1938 cap question

Hi, just revivng this thread. Have seen a couple of Luftwaffe visors recently, both dated 1938, but with 1st pattern eagles on.

Does anyone know if this is quite common, or unusual in any way? I'm guessing that 1938 was in the transition period for the change over of the eagles, and that old stocks of 1st pattern eagles would have been used up etc?

Also, I'm guessing that those caps already made wouldn't have to have had the earlier eagles removed and replaced with 2nd pattern to conform to regulations, because if that was the case there wouldn't be many caps with 1st pattern eagles around!

              Appreciate any thoughts.

              Regards, Paul

                Hi Paul,
In my opinion, you are fine with either eagle on a '38 dated cap, but I would prefer to see the second pattern on a '39 dated cap. That being said, the publication date for regulations and the actual implementation are two different things. Naturally, a tailor is going to use what ever stock he has on hand, before he orders new examples. Then of course, come the personal choices of the soldier wearing the visor cap, who may decide to change out the eagle for the model he prefers, or sometimes they would choose the older models to make themselves appear like more experienced veteran.
                Thank you,
