I have had this hat for a long time, but it from a guy who did not know if it was real or not, years ago and I expect it's not but I'm just curious. It even has some moth nips on it.

Well, ... the insignia looks good !

As for the cap itself, it looks post war to me, along with possibly East German chin cords (are there metal or plastic sliders inside the knots?).

do a search for Alteste and you'll find a lot of similar caps. These are early post-war repros and in my opinion the most dangerous ones.
