I think it's original.

Original fez. Pity someone removed insignia, probably to restore M43 cap.

Sweat band has been restitched, as there are extra holes ...the insignia for the skull holes do not look correct and isn't lined up well in relation to the eagles position . I am skeptical and on the fence with this one. I also have to say On the fez subject, I have proof now the taller types we have seen in photos in the past on the forum, were worn by lower rank men, and it seems the shorter types( like this shorter type) ,were above a certain rank , and I believe were for officers above an enlisted mans rank(not sure where the breaking point is for the rank to wear the short type ). color seems off a little, may just be the camera. If you like it ,that is all that counts, but will still always be a molested fez in my book .

Juoneen, that is a very interesting theory, would you be able to share more about it (intentional differences between sizes)? I have mentioned previously that in Longerich's book on Himmler there is a citation that Himmler personally ordered maroon fezzes to be changed to a specific color variation (in November 1943) as it seems he was not satisfied with the initial order.
