On my monitor the background looks black. If that is correct, I'd say it could be for an early Panzer beret. If it is black, what else would it be for? Certainly not a visor cap which one would think would require a dark green background. Look at Brian L. Davis German Army Uniforms and Insignia 1933-1945, (1972) page 160. Picture # 290 looks pretty spot on to me.

Lets add some light to this image. Looks green to me. We all know these greens can be pretty dark and can look black, but...

Its not dark green. Maybe it could be dark dark blue.... but still very black to me.

On my monitor is a green one that someone has taken a black felt pen to. I don't think its original either...
