I'd say it's an original one. The rust damage and missing insignia will make this a tough project though - but get it if it's cheap.

Unless you already have the right insignia, restoring one of these will almost be impossible.
I would go for it, only if it was the price of a pack of cigarettes.

Ive only seen a few sets of insignia come up and they are expensive when they do. But if you can get the cap for cheap then why not. Matt

I saw it aslo in czech auction, but agree. The biggest problem is to get insignia. More often comming Christmas than eagle and cockade for Hermann Mayer cap

Regarding the insignia, you can always decide to simply settle for a standard LW bold cockade and tropical side cap or breast eagle; this combination has been witnessed in originals as well.

You could always attach a salty set of officer's bullion eagle and cockade, to appear as an officer's personalized upgrade, as such did exist (though dern near non-existent). But, if you did that, then silver bullion chincords would be more appropriate. If you elected to make it appear as an officer upgrade, then you could sell the chincord that is currently affixed to the hat to fund the purchase of the bullion insignia, chincord, and a carton of cigs- perhaps even two, maybe three cartons!

In other words, don't take Jos' comment literally; that gentleman has an unwordly collection that contains pieces of such rarity, which are in impeccable condition too, that it's easy for him to jokingly take jabs at items in such condition as the Meyer you posted. Had he said it was fake, then by all means listen- he's a guru of Lufty items!

And to all of those who think the bevo wreath and eagle are hard to locate, try finding an original Meyer hat chinstrap! In my 30 years of collecting, I've personally sold 4 sets of the bevo Meyer insignia; it took me 15 years to locate a chinstrap!

Regardless, each opinion offered herein is sound advice; I wish you (& everyone else) the very best in your endeavors. Hope you get the hat, especially if you can get it for less than 400 Euros!
