If it's not re-dyed (all coloured fabrics are dyed at the start) then explain why the green dye has bled onto the lining in the extact spot where the cap cover, piping and lining are all sewn together?

There's also another pic of a blob of green dye on another part of the cap.

Period dyes do not bleed due to sweat, rain or wet farts. That's a fact.

To induce bleeding of the original colour, you'd have to soak the piping in hot water and colour remover for a long time and even then, only a faint amount of colour would bleed out.

          Wow....

So, it can be possible, that this cap had some worn piping, and the owner (perhaps period done), not wanting to have the worn look, decided to dye the worn areas?

Hmmm.....almost makes too much sense, since the remainder of the piping has no evidence of dye, and the only bleed through is where the major wear is located.

This cap isn't exactly what I thought it was when I bought it (probably paid a bit too much for it), but it's in good shape and looks great in my cabinet.

            3.4

A few more....and I DON'T think I'll soak the whole cap to try to get the dye out.

Here is a shot of a similar Erel I once owned, I believe it is the same cap DonC is referring to, and he may have better photos that capture the fading better.

                Thanks

Basel, I'd say it's a close match. One thing for sure, EREL is the best manufacturer IMHO. I'll likely only purchase Erels in the future. They have a great look to them.

It would be my guess that the top ring of piping was re-dyed to cover some fading as you've suggested.

In regards to eReL Sonderklasse being the best manufacturer, well, you need to study some more hats.

You are correct Ben. I should have further qualified my statement to say that Erel is the best manufacturer I have seen as far as caps I have owned. Being fairly new to visor collecting, the look of their cap is better than the other five or six I have owned.

Thank you very much for your input. Now I know and understand exactly what I have!

                      That is the one, Basel!

Im no visor cap collector but i can assure you that some period vegetable dyes used in period flag manufacture will bleed when wet.

Perhaps they used Aniline dyes in piping colours which arent affected by water.

No need to retract your comment, Crusader. It is all subjective and no one can tell you what the best manufacturer is universally since everyone prefers something different. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, there is nothing wrong with saying EREL is the best!

                            Nothing wrong with that all.

It's just that "best" usualy means the best quality or the best made product.

The beauty in being a hat collector is that there were so many period hat making firms and individual artisans. Previously unknown makers appear nearly every week.

I don't know who the best milliner was, I haven't seen them all yet and never will.

                            I have my "favourites" though.

Thanks Ben, agreed. Which cap manufacturer would you say had the best quality overall so far? Paul Kaps?
