    Artillerie Schirmmütze, crushed

    Gentlemen,

I want to show you this nice Schirmmütze. Lots of wear, I like the traces of the wearer's thumb on the underside of the visor and the deliberate 'crush' on the crown. Seems as if the owner 'pinched' the top between two fingers, everytime just before putting it on his head...

Could somebody put a date this cap? I'd like it to be pre-war, but actually I don't have a clue. What kind of fabric is it made of? If anybody has an idea about the maker, please let me know. Difficult, without the liner 'diamond'...

I think the eagle has been replaced, as there are three holes but only two pins on the badge. Seems like a zinc (?) eagle, so late-war, but the cockade is aluminium (early?)... All ideas are welcome...

    Thanks,

    Lucius

It may be pre war. Show the inside. Its a molted wool. It was used in the late 30's to the mid war or so.

Some calls it boiled wool. Nice looking visor. Jacques

        Gentlemen,

        some additional pictures.

Thank you NTZ and Jacques! So this cap seems to be pre-war?

        Regards,

        Lucius

I would say later war. All the boiled wool caps I have seen were later war. With ersath leather sweatbands . Here is one of mine. Jacques

Thanks Jacques, but your picture failed to appear.

Nick, I remembered missing your posts on the forum. Welcome back!

Nice one, Jacques! Panzergrenadiere, isn't it? Is your cap a real crusher, or is it 'crushed' like mine? My cap has a vertical stiffener at the front, but no ring around the top at all. You can see how thumd and middle finger formad the crown by 'pinching' it.

It is not a real crusher, crushed type like yours. Jacques

Did crushers always have a leather visor and woven insignia? I mean, in order to call them 'real' crushers? Would the 'crushed' types be worn in the field?

Yes and yes and they would have a flexible cap band. The crush type was worn every where, by everyone, luft, SS,heer, field and at home. It was a fashion thing. Jacques

I would say that this cavalry that I post earlier in another thread (see the link) will go under "real crushers" even if it has embroidered bullion insignia but leather visor. The entire construction speaks crusher and not a visor that being crushed in my and others opinion

                          Gentlemen,

I would very much like some confirmation on the fabrication date of the Arty cap that started the thread. Of course I'm grateful for Jacques' well-founded opinion, but I'd like to learn more about the characteristics of pre-, early- and late-war caps.
                          Thank you all,

                          Lucius
