This has to be the silliest thread I've ever seen...no one can give a reason why the cap is fake except "just because someone else told them". With a few added speculations without proof on when certain parts were used basing it all on other old caps found...no one knows how many manufacturers of these there were or even all the countries the makers were in..this type of hat was used in many countries and still is today.

Sell me your fake cap for $35.00 please. Because I know where Sayle really got his cap and that he enjoys the reponses it gets from "experienced" collectors because of what he know's it really shows that when it comes to some things there are no experts.

No experienced collectors here. I wonder why people put an item up for opinions and then get pissed when the opinions don't go there way.

Well then, I'm glad your not pissed.
Mr. Pic, I would gladly have sold you the hat but as a result of this thread, someone else contacted me first. It has been sold as an excellent reproduction and priced accordingly.

Darn..I would have loved to have it...no kidding. I have a lot of faith in my friend Sayle's abilities to pull stuff out of the woodwork...and have been there at times to see it happen.

I have to bite my tongue now because I want to tell about some of the things but Sayle wouldn't appreciate that...I'll say this...best picker in the hobby.

I don't quite get the reason for the angry rhetoric. Several knowledgeable collectors who have handled numerous examples of original Heer M-43 caps have said that they believe this one to be a reproduction. I happen to agree with them but if you do not, it is simply a difference of opinions.

What angry rhetoric? Im not angry Im just returning Lenny W's sarcasm ...you know it goes both ways Sayle is a very experienced collector and so am I so if you dont agree they are original thats fine we can agree to disagree its not your opinions that send threads south, most of you are respected collectors, its the one liner sarcasm by another member ...but when the first stone is cast don't expect me to lay down and take it. Peace

Unfortunately, fakes are getting better and better and are now coming to a point that some of them cannot be identified for sure and that some originals are getting discarded because they are not textbook.

Be prepared to more and more thread like this one.

My choice is to stick to textbook items only, and avoid mint ones unless I know the exact provenance without third party.

Artifical aging of a fake can still be spotted relatively easily for an experienced collector. And my final rule is to pass when I am not sure even if I let go a good piece.

Regarding this M43, my opinion is that it is a well made fake and I really do not think that I am wrong on this one.

This doesn't prevent somebody to believe that Sayle is the best picker in the hobby. We cannot win all the time. That's a part of the game...

                            m43's

I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the experts in TR cloth headgear. Their opinion is gold on this subject. If you intend on being convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt of the reasons an M43 is not original, and refuse to take their requested advise, then you are mistaken. They, as well as most other seasoned collectors know that the fakers seek this information even more then you, and the details and differences will never be supplied to them via this forum.

If Larry, Glenn, NickG, Mike & Harry say it's not good then you should stand corrected & appreciative. They like the rest of us only want to protect the integrity of the hobby.
The hat however does has value the way it is, it's a great filler for a display, or a keen reenactor.
I know getting the old hurts, but as a wise collector once observed; "it is what it is, nothing more, & nothing less" (Marty Cliffe, 2005)

I totally agree with this assessment. Personally, this is not a hat I would want to own. I can't say for certain that it is fake but for the money these things change hands for, I would want an example with fewer question marks.
