The skull is a replacement. Good eye. The eagle is original to the hat (forgot the RZM markings, but they are tiny and don't match any known repros). The skull is silver and marked 900 on the very tip of the chin. No markings on the back and it's semi hollow (semi solid). Anyone who has examined the hat personally has never had anything bad to say about it (other than the skull doesn't match the eagle). I knew that when I bought it. I won't cry over that as I'm happy to have an original hat. The liner is torn and stained, and the sweat shield is cracked. If I ever have to sell it, it won't bring top dollar, but it's still a decent hat.
I'm new here, visiting the headgear threads. Some great items posted - wonder if John Hodgin could tell me the maker on the Luft yellow piped EM cap? It looks a private purchase cap to me, (and absolutely "pristine"!) so should have a mark. Would also like to know the makers on Gene's Summer luft caps.
I also like Gordon's KM Schloffelmutze (Donald Duck) cap - can't seem to find any of these around my area that are any good, (although I'm not really a KM specialist). Have you also got a white topped example, Gordon? Who's the maker on the blue DD cap, if any is marked? In reading Wilkins' Collector's Guide I noticed he only mentions one confirmed maker of DD caps ("Mutzen Scherff").
Here's a nice one for everybody - this a rare examle of an internet bargain that was actually a good one. This cap I got from a Police Commander in Missouri, who was trying to auction it with a reserve of $1500 (value actually arund $4500) in order to get money quickly to buy a confederate officer's sword (this I learned in private communications with him). He'd been collecting SS stuff since 1979, and was also offering an SS geneal's cap (would that I had taken that one too!!) . Great deal.
A nice example of a post 1941 vintag officer's EREL. Has the vulkanfiber visor instead of leather w/picquee edge. Subdued piping. This one came from Bill Shea in 1985.
I don't see your pics. I keep reloading the page, which is slow to come up (even though I have DSL) and all I get are the white boxes with red X's. As for my summer visors, my Signals doesn't have a liner (never did) and so no maker marked sweat diamond. My Tellerform-looking flight piped one is unmarked, my Sattelform flight piped one is marked Sonderklasse Stirndrückfrei DRGM Ges. Gesch. The white piped one is marked with the size, GG and 1938 under the sweat diamond.
Hi Gene, thanks for the news. Sorry they aren't showing up; The SS cap is a nice one. I linked the pics to Geocities where they reside (they're also on my hard drive). When I first set up the posts, the pics displayed; now I can't see them either. I used the "IMG" button, and the little window that came up looked to me like a hyper link, with 'http' and all - so I linked to the pics on my geocities pages. The Forum faq mentions a "browse" button to use when uploading a file directly off the drive, but on this posting form, I couldn't find any "browse" button. Any suggestions?
Gary when you are an association member you can upload pictures directly from this webpage server, it is only $20 per year and I can assure is one of the best inversion you can make, it allowed you to put all pictures that you want directly and this help me to find more info about it and avoid some fakes.
Cheers
Angel
Looking for DKiG Heer winner Soldbuch who also won the TDB and/or CCC, specially in Silver.
thanks for responding to the novice here! Actually I did link to the pics on another server, but for some reason they wont display. Will try once more with one pic using the page itself (*.html) instead of the IMAGE itself (*.jpg) and see if that makes any difference.
Thanks again, everybody. Gary Franks
in case the picture link doesn't work, here's a straight link to the SS cap:
Gary I've never seen a Erel Luft. officers visor with a metal cockade (it looks to be in the photo). But I'm not a visor guy. Has anyone else seen this?
