an old thread... but then, old threads are what 'research' is all about, right? The image below was taken from Wilhelm Saris' headgear book Vol. 3, page 62, a photo Karl Weinreich wherein Saris states: "note the knot-system with the cords on this 1934-model cap."
I emailed Mr. Saris about this style of cords and he responded:
"This cord system was the same form as in use with the kepi form of headgear and discussed with the pages 48 (Spenger's book) and so on. See the scedules. This was official. (I wonder if anyone has photos of SA Kepis sporting these cords...)
When the visored cap came into being for a while the cords with knots remained, being replaced by regular silver or golden wire cords in 1935. The cord construction is noted with page 86. From the earlier cords with knots I never have found a proper manufacturing-regulation. Observed cords with knots were from the same materials as from 1935, but its quality had a higher grade of gold. I have no knowledge of cloth versus bullion wite. Maybe this is just a manufacturer’s variation.
I checked some cataloques and for the postal organization there existed an aluminum cord interwoven with orange; for Bahnschutz there existed a golden cord which was silver interwoven. This silver is largely a greyish silk wire. No other organization is known to me having extra knots in 1934/1935."
He mentioned Spenger and said there is also photograph of these cords on page 71 as well although I don't have a copy of that book. Would anyone have a reference copy who could show the photo mentioned?
