G'day, my latest purchase has just arrived, I know little about these caps, so can somebody help me zero in on the general date of production from the manufacture & style please? Discounting the insignia, which appear to be an original eagle & repro cockade, & the repairs to the sweatband stitching etc (somebody's used glue as well as stitching, also to affix the insignia) can it be dated by the introduction of any features, the type of peak etc? The ink stamps on the inside of the front of the sweatband are "5 (then a small u over a small v) 792H". I have genuine "used" cockade insignia en route to replace the glued on one.....Thanks.

Leigh, I'm afraid there's no good news whatsoever regarding your cap!
It appears to be a post war (something) and doctored to appear period.
Get your $ back right away!

There is alot about this hat that is wrong. I didn't even get around to realy looking at the outside of the cap, I was too hung up with the inside. This is not a WWII LW officers hat. (It quite possibly is an early customs police hat altered to look like a LW hat)
A typical LW officers hat is usually a high quality, private purchase item. The lining should be a good to high grade of satin, usually golden, cream or greyish in color (there are many other colors that can be found however, red is not one of them). The visor many times has a green cross hached texture on the underside and the color of the wool is dark blue grey.

I was looking quickly thru "The Collectors Guide to Cloth 3rd Reich Headgear" to try and figure this out. But just looked quickly. didnt even think about the liner being wrong. I just saw a similar visor and cap band and didnt really read into it.Comment
