Outstanding photos Gustav, thanks for posting and adding to this very informative thread. Would say all the Herr M40's and sidecaps in this thread are good with maybe one exception. Not talking about the custom/field made, but the factory made M40's. The LW M41's are not looking good (with maybe one exception) based on the photos from Gustav...

Also great appreciation to Ralph for taking his time so long ago on this old but still very relevant thread

Here is an interesting pic of SS Südfront showing a Sturmbannführer wearing a cap that resembles a tropical M40 with false flaps and no buttons.

Hi, reviving this interesting thread with another addition, an unissued Kriegsmarine tropical M41 cap by maker "hpc" (Hermann Potthoff of Coesfeld). It's identical to the worn cap in posts #43 and 44 of this thread.

Hello all,
First, please excuse my poor photography, not a strong point!
I have two LW tropical caps, both of which could be fakes/repros, so I am prepared to hear this confirmed, but, please, do not just say FAKE! without explanation. The aim is to increase my knowledge, so, yes, feel free to tell me that are fake, but, if possible suggest the obvious reasons and where they were produced.
The enlisted rank example has a very doubtful application of a temperate zone trap, clearly wrong, but strange to go to the trouble of making a reasonable cap and then blight it with the insignia.
I will let the scans tell the story.
The maker on the red lining is Paul Wagenmann.

The exterior of the first cap is clearly very dirty, but the lines of grime conform to the cap having been stored flat in a dirty environment.

Here are the signs of long-term folding. The lower areas are much lighter, having been "inside" the creases.

hi,this is a fake cap for me....the backing of the eagle is of the same material as is the cap which is big red flag for me as 99% of these LW caps are field made,the eagle is fake too...
