    Pith Helmet KM ?

    Salut ,

Can you please tell me what you think of this TroppenHelm ?

6 panels, green lining , I think it is a good Kriegsmarine 2nd Mdl ?

But I am a little concerned about the sweat-band ,

the texture, the way it is stiched, ie : it appears from the photo to be stiched directly on the body of the helmet and then the outside horizontal band stiched over (hidding the sweat-band stiching).

I also dont think this stamps has anything to do there... but I guess it could have been added by "collector" .

Thanks very much for your help ,

I saw this on Ebay recently, thought about bidding on it. For sure KM tropenhelm, though I have never seen one with such a big eagle stamp under the sweatband.

The insignia will probably cost you more than it did, but still a good price.

    Regards,

    Jerry

The Km examples sometimes have this type of sweatband. And it would be considered a 1st model, not 2nd model, IMO, as it's not the felt type.

          re- Jerry,

Thanks for the clarification on the sweat-band.
I put the KM pith helmets in 4 categories :

          - the early Mdls like the white white with 4 ventilation holes,
          - the 1st Mdl, canvas covered with a oversized frontal eagle,
          - the 2nd Mdl, canvas covered with side shields,
          - the foreign re-used ones with side shields,

As far as I know (but I could be wrong) the Kriegsmarine did not use the fely Mdls ?

It's difficult to give a proper model classification for the KM, as they do have different variations compared to the Herr or Luftwaffe.

I think most people consider the frontal eagle type and the side eagle type as being the same, 1st model.

The prestoff type I consider pre war, rather than 1st model.

Early canvas examples often have the zigzag mounted sweatband and the green dome, whilst later types look more like Heer or Luftwaffe types, with a red dome.

I have seen one example of a felt pattern tropenhelm with KM shields. It was in Matt's collection, but he was selling it so I'm not sure if he still has it.

It would be good to establish a good typology for KM tropenhelms that would aid discusion.

            Regards,

            Jerry

PS does it have a makers mark?
