For future reference, the reasons why the guys who have much more experience than I are saying its fake are: First, the insignia are incorrect..the skull is a panzer skull and the eagle belongs on a political cap, also the next most noticeable give away is the plastic sweat-shield diamond (they often ripple like this one).

Thank you so much for some details. That really helps. The owner was aware that the political eagle was odd to be on that cap. He was told by a long term collector (not the one he bought the cap from and much later after purchase) that, early on, they used that eagle for a short period of time. I, personally, have no idea as I don't collect headgear or cloth items in general.

The skull is actually the 'jawless' 1st pattern SS skull which was officially worn between 1923 and 1934 and probably perfectly original, yes the eagle is off a political cap but that's not totally unknown. It's the cap itself here that's bad.

Ian,

I trying to learn...can you tell me what about the cap is wrong. The sweat liner on the inside of the top has been mentioned. It's not made of hard plastic but of a softer material that doesn't "click" when you hit it with your fingernail.

NTZ and Kreager said the cap was bad, they know FAR more specifics than me, I was specifically correcting the error about the insignia.

Thanks for pointing that out Ian, I stand corrected and apologize for the error. I gave the photo too quick of a look and made an incorrect assumption.

The cap is a well known fake made in the 1970's. The quick items to point out are, plastic shield, bad ruins, fake RZM tag, wrong visor material, wrong lining material, wrong sweatband material, etc. Just compare to know originals and you will see a stark difference between the two.
