Yep, I had one of these some years back and swore it was real. They are all the same. Loose wound piping, cheap cotton lining lacking proper pleats, plastic sweatdiamond. I bet the leather sweatband is slightly folded over on the edge. The one I had did have a good late war eagle with needle type prongs. It also had a real vulcanfiber visor. They look pretty good and have a lot of original materials but are post 1945.

I'll never forget when a guy bought one round to my house to sell as authentic.
He got really angry when I told him it wasn't real.

Despite all the equivocating, there is still the fact that there is nothing like the "real deal" and the knowledge that something was actually in WWII. Repro's have no intrinsic historic value and never will.

Unfortunately, the Alteste caps were/are just about good enough to fool a lot of collectors. As fillers in a collection, they are most sought after.

The way I see it, the mutzenmachers skill didn't diminish post 45 and shouldn't be dismissed as junk. It's just that the clientele changed.

the late-war eagles on them are authentic Assman eagles aren't they?

I still don't understand wanting to have a known reproduction "anything" in a collection. I've been nailed on several occasions. I keep them......but they never see daylight. If it is not period, it's not history. What is the point?
