Artillery Officer's Visor Cap - Opinions Please!

Hi Everybody,

I've recently been offered this visor cap, as part of a grouping. I have never really explored the wonderful world of headgear, though I am becoming frequently tempted. Consequently, I would very much appreciate your opinions on this visor.

If anyone has any thoughts on this, please let me know, as I'm supposed to confirm the deal today.

I did a search on the forum earlier, for 'Die Qualitatsmutze', the only search that came back talked about the 'tell-tale' label having been removed. Does anyone know this label (and maker)? Is it period?

Tricot looks fine, damage aside. I think the insignia may not be original to the cap...possibly bad insignia as well as the proportions and construction just strike me as a bit off.

The shape of the cap is not good...looks crushed...and the brim/peak is not the Vulkanfiber, glossy material, nor the laquer coverd style of 'crushers'.

I am not familiar with the maker...but that's just me. I see no signs of a sweat shield and the marking of the size stamped in the top lining is unusual to me.

Arty officer caps are relatively easy to get...and I would suggest finding a more representative cap, say and Erel or Pekuro, that will be a nicer looking piece.

Toby the maker is period! That is to say that the lable/art work on the silk liner was found in period caps but was covered by a cello diamond.

The caps were well made...so here's the sticky part. The cap you show appears to be very poorly constructed utilizing the same tricot material for the upper as well as the caps frame. The insignia as pointed out are probably bad.

Considering the workmanship, material and lack of diamond ( who wants paint rubbing off on one's head ) it is probably best to step aside!

Many thanks for replying. You've both given me some good points to consider. I've now contacted the seller with some questions as to the sweat diamond, and insignia. I shall be on my guard now though.

Thanks for the link. Actually, I was looking at this yesterday. You're right - quite a difference.

I've been trying to think of reasons why the visor could be as it is, i.e. pretty poor. Anyway, I think I'm going to pass now. Just to worrying to go with.

Toby there were lots of 'surplus' liners left over after the war that found their way in to post war caps. I can imagine bundles and bundles of liners etc. laying around for years.....that is until a 'use' was found for them!

Hi Everybody,

Well, whilst not wishing to flog a dead horse, I now have the cap in hand, so to speak. I've photographed it myself, and would just be curious to see what you make of it now (that you can see it).

This is a good learning experience for me; so more comments warmly welcomed.

One thing I would say is that the lining looks pretty spotless.
