    EARLY? Gauleiter Visor

I don't collect Political items but I could not refuse this visor cap because it just talked to me and has a very nice salty look to it.

This cap was just found by a friend of mine. He purchased it from the widow of a WWII vet. and it is the only souvenier he brought back. Unfortunately the sweat band is totally gone and it has no maker, RZM tag, etc. It does have the owners inititals in the hat. The initials read "H V" and are very hard to photograph (maybe someone knows who it may have belonged to??). The velvet band could actually be removed but the eagle and cockade would also have to be removed to do so. I don't know if this is normal, but I am including this info. for those of you in the know. The eagle is made from either cupal or nickle silver (the prongs are NS for sure) and does not appear to have been gold but it is obvious that it's been on the hat forever and it is highly detailed.

What I really liked about it is that the centeral cockade is metal but the outer "leaves" are done in gold bullion wire and embroidered directly to the band. The buttons are domed and marked "superior quality" on the back, they are also sewn to the cap not pushed through with prongs like most. The chinstrap has really gathered a dark patina but if you remove it the backside is pretty nice.

The only really sad thing about it is that the hat was loaned out many years ago for a school play and the hat size of 7 1/4 was marked onto the liner near the sweat shield.

Any info. or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Chuck

Based on this limited pics, I would say it is just a movie prop. The wreath is incorrect. do you have complete pics of the interior?

Here are some higher resolution pictures of the outside.

I will have to get some better internal pictures.

Initials "H V" and a partial of the sweat shield.

The shape and size looks more Russian influence to me.

Sorry, but the hat is not authentic. Wreath is incorrect, and the band should be rust-brown velvet for starter. Movie or stage prop.

This is what a bullion wreath should look like:

That metal wreath for sure looks like an original BUT it does not belong on that fakey hat. The wreath looks like one of those original early thin types, which are found in a silver finish for Army, & gold (brass) for Naval uses. I've gotten in these both gold & silver early thin types from veterans, I specifically recall a gold one when I was around 10 yrs old in 1951 from a veteran's trunkful hoard, a neighbor across the street. The early Veterans Associations used that type as well but theirs usually had an extra arrangement with holes for the Association's Badge pc to be affixed in the center of the wreath. An example of this early wreath can be seen pictured in the 1968 "German Relics Collector's Guide", by Stan Bozich, Supplement 2, at the top of page 15.

Interesting you said that. See the way the lining is sewn in with the straight across stitching. That is very Soviet. You see it on rare occasions in Third Reich caps but almost always in Soviet caps. The cap in not of TR origin IMHO. The chin cord also looks Soviet.

That band is removable. What is under it?

                              Gentlemen,

Thank you all for the information.

I also wrote to Bob Coleman asking for his opinion as well and he has concured with you all.

Last night I also found an actual size tag under the lining that also read 7 1/4. I believe that this hat may have been an old movie prop.

Now it appears I am going to have to confront my collegue regarding his "story" of where it came from and is a reminder to me not to delve into areas I don't know.

                              Thanks again!

                              Regards,

                              Chuck
