worn sidecap - new purchase

Got it couple of months ago together with some german TR equipment.
I try to stay clear of textiles, cause I don't have any clue, but this piece I though it was right. Pritty worn sidecap.
Any suggestion what the purpose of two holes (mice holes?) on the side of the cap? Maybe for an insignia?
