Comparing Heer black Panzer M43 caps

A recent visit by Panzer Bob and frank2far provided an opportunity to photograph a few black M43 caps together. The group pictured here is of the type with which I have the most comfort.

Although these caps have an overall similar appearance, the discerning viewer will notice minor differences between them – in fabric, insignia application, stitching, buttonholes, lining materials, markings, etc.<O

And then there was a fourth (upper left), a little different from the others.

Note the use of non T-type insignia and the smaller buttons. Formerly I owned another black M43 with these type buttons but with the T-form insignia sewn as a trapezoid (and dated ’42!). Historically I have been skeptical of all caps using this insignia pattern even though I have also had and seen cut-offs with this type of trapezoid originally sewn. Markings are faded but a RBNr and other markings are just discernable if held at the right angle in strong light.
