A simple LW M43, opinions please

    Hi,
I was just wondering what people think of this LW M43. It has the trapezoid insignia and is made of a light-weight wool-rayon blend material. The button, cap and insignia stitching all look original to the cap. And last but certainly not least, the cap has that je ne sais quoi aged-smell about it. (What is that smell anyways--a combo of dust and old wool, I suppose?)
    Thanks in advance, Lee

        Hey Lee,
What you have here is a Luft M43 Summer issue cap, or lightweight model,

What is it marked? And it might have a silverish rayon linning to it.

        Thanks for sharring Michael

As you can see (you jumped in too soon, Michael!) the lining is the rayon type. It is marked "58" (it lies, it's more like a size 56 or smaller). Thanks for the comment. -Lee

Thank you, Michael! I get worried about these M43's anymore with all of the junk coming out of E. Europe these days. This one does seem very solid and with your vote of confidence I feel that much more assured of its authenticity.

                    Hi Lee,

I collect WH and LW M43s as well and I wouldn't rain on the parade here but this is the first time I hear about summer-issue LW M43s!I don't want to doubt what our friend says but even if it's hard to tell by the photos(color may be distorted)it seems as if the cap it's made of Italian gabardine cloth! The German made extensive use of this cloth after September 1943 Armistice, seizing it in Italian depots and many M43s made with this classy fabric still surface! All the M43s I've seen made of this cloth were WH-issue and I've never seen one made with Regia Aereonautica Blue Gabardine!Your M43 could be a private purchase, but its insigna would make me think twice before affirming such a thing!Lining is OK and I know very well what you mean when you talk about that peculiar"aroma",but imho there's something strange with your cap....I cannot tell exactly what at the moment and I may be waaaay wrong, of course, but since you've asked for opinion here's mine, for what is worth,of course!

                      Manuel,
Yes you are raining on the parade, although its tomorrow here in New York Anyway, as you stated the Germans did use this material, here are the caps that they made, very odd that you haven't herd of these caps, they aren't really talked about in books that I am aware of, but they have been around sicne day #1.

About the insignia, if you handle one of these caps in the future you will notice that there isn't really much to these caps, very "flemsy" which creates problems when you are trying to add insignia, if your worries are about the stiching, thats the way it was done.

                      Here is mine:

                            I appreciate your comments.

I have seen this lightweight material before for LW caps. I was under the impression that it was fairly common to see the LW M43s with a lighter material (more common than for Heer and about as common as for SS, as I understood it).
