    ss m40 sidecap

    Hello Gents,
I need your opinion about this cap. Offered for me for Eur1100 (around $1400), I think the cap is original, insignias also. Coluld be made from a captured material (maybe czech or russian) in end of the war.
I know difficult to say when was the insignia applied.
What do you think about the cap and about the price? Is this a rare piece?
    Thanks,
    Alex

Although the material of the cap looks strange (but period) - it shows honest wear.

                  I like it!

Hard to say when the badges were applied obviously. I don't think they were done at the same time though, the skull is probably the later addition with the eagle possibly being period done. Unusual chunky weave cloth but the cut is good, lining looks authentic too.

As for the price, the old argument about "non-textbook" items will no doubt come into it again and whether it should effect the price or not. IMO, if you could get it for 1000 or a bit less, I think that's a good deal.

                    Ben,

Insignia look both reapplied with the same thread

Maybe it's the photos but the thread holding on the eagle looks a different weight and colour to the skull?

Interesting cap...they got the cut right, but that is some crappy material, but very believable especially as captured stock from who knows where (someone will know)? It did look better before all the fading.

The skull looks to have been applied more than once, eagle isn't as apparent, but possible. Same thread used on both, with the possible addition of a heavier gauge thread used on the lower right side of eagles wing. That looks more recent as it doesn't have that blue tinge that old black thread seems to get when aged.

It's a roll of the dice as with any non standard item.

                        Richard

IMO the thread in the marked areas looks the same:

You're correct but you only show one small area of sewing on the eagle.

The rest of the eagle sewing is different IMO.

Can someone remind me though why I should even care about any of this "discussion"? It's not my cap and I don't intend on buying it either?!

                              Hi Gents,
thank you for your replies and discussion.
Ben, you don't have to care about this cap.
Only I have to care a little, I don't know is this worth that money or not.
