    Issues with Officer army cap?

    Guys,

I had this on estand and it was inspected by Brett Dixon, lovely chap who turned up a few queries that I'd like to bring to your attention.

In the piping there appears to be 2 sections where the cord is poking out of the hat, where these occur the cord looks like a hollow white plastic cord, what are your thoughts on this?

Also, trapped underneath the piping there appears to be remnants of dark green/black thread is this significant?

and lastly can you check under the sweatband to let me know if there are any issues here?

p.s. the bird is a repro

    Much obliged.

Nothing to worry about. That's a reed that runs inside the piping to keep the shape and its now poking out in this case. A lot of people freak out when they see it because it is a plastic type of material of some sort but it's totaly authentic.

In regards to the different coloured sewing thread in the folds of the piping, again, that's perfectly normal. There will be numerous rows of stitching in these gaps, it's what holds all the parts of the cap together.

        Agree with Ben
Chincord looks unusual, could just be the lighting?

Thanks mate, Brett pulled out about 5 or 6 stiches that were about a milimeter in length from under the piping, I guess he was worried that it may be a restitch job.

The chincord is discoloured in places, here's a better photo(?)

            Cap

            Hi Jeff,
It was nice to meet you today

Just to add some more info, the small stitches around the piping of the cap were about 3mm in length, and were numerous.....remanants of stitching that had been cut in the past for some reason. They could only be found when peeling the piping away from the cap body, and then could easily be pulled out with your fingers.
Also the black "tar like" paper substance under the sweatband was odd...never seen anything like it before in caps of the period. Anyone else ever seen this in a period cap?
The plastic reed in the piping was also a concern, however Ben says it is acceptable so perhaps that's not an issue.
The chincord is not silver bullion but a white sort of fabric construction when viewed in hand.
My impressions were that the cap was perhaps "rebuilt" at some stage?

Some late war chinstraps are a snythetic with a silver ish BATH so to speak that can quickly fade from silver to silver white with period sunlight exposure or just storage and time..Billbert

In regards to the loose stitches. It's more likely that they have broken rather than been cut unless some collector had the idea of taking the piping off to repair it but then gave up? Stranger things have happened.

The "tar like substance" is probably just an extra thick coating on the pasteboard to make the cap a bit more waterproof. You can see that the peak has also got a very thick coating of lacquer so prehaps this maker had a line of "heavy duty" caps or it was a one off for the customer.

I just noticed there isn't a photo of the shield, is it unmarked?

I don't see any signs of a rebuild either.
