Thank you all for your comments. The cap is not yet mine. It came from a Army Air Force vet. So I do not want to remove anything until I can work out a deal with him.

I doubt whether the sweat diamond, which would have been unmarked, was "torn out". It simply would have become brittle, then cracked, then would have dislodged piece by piece...

I agree, the sweatdiamond was one of the most fragile things on a cap...it's absence don't means nothing.
