I've had this for some time but don't know what it is. Anyone know?

Going by the markings, could it have French connections?

yes, a french army sidecap.

Crap...here I thought it was Schupo, attached to the volunteer fire Police, loaned to Luftwaffe factory guards, drafted by the KM, and then attached to a Heer panzer recon platoon, made by a French maker.
