    Best Marker Of Schirmmutze ?

    Hello guys

What is the best and famous maker of german hats during ww 2 :

EREL ( Sonderklasse ) or HOLTERS

And what is the must hunter by collectors ?

Not really a visor collector but the nicest ones I've ever seen usually turn out to be EREL's. I'm sure visor collectors know better but this is what I've noticed...I didnt think any were shabby..

I believe Hitler favored Holters, so during the war that was probably
the most famous. From what I've read Goering also like Holters and
Lubsteins as well. These caps would have to be flawless, of course.
Peter Kupper (Pekuro) made caps in all price ranges and was very
famous during the 3rd Reich. Luxus, Shellenberg, and Christian Haug
also made some very nice caps. I guess some collectors prefer certain
makers, but I couldn't care less. I like them all.

Does anybody know where a complete list of visor cap mfgs can be had? A complete list with makers marks or hat labels?

          Thanks

            Hi,

As EREL caps are possibly the most common quaility cap around as well as the most faked ,Holters has to be the most desirable i have several EREL's but no Holter's i also have a number that i am waiting for from old collections.

Are you guys sure that 'Holters' manufactured visor caps?

Would it be more likely that they 'commisioned' a certain Firm to produce a cap utilizing certain materials and ofcourse the 'Holters' lable!

Hi Steve, there is no "complete" list of cap makers available, but Gary Wilkins book on headgear does give a list of known, researched, makers.

I do like the "Erel" product.

                Cheers, Ade.

SteveM, I'm far from an expert on visor caps, but I don't think you'llfind a complete list anywhere, there were many small mom & pop companies that
produced them that did not survive the bombing raids. As for a general list
of some of the better known makers & their marks, Gary Wilkins's book has
                  a pretty good list.

I like all of the mentioned makers and I'll add Clemens Wagner as I think that they made very nice looking caps. My personal favorite is Paul Kaps, a little known maker whose caps were often not per regulation for a variety of reasons. If anyone has any nice ones for sale, let me know!

                    Regards,

                    Drew

Hi all..no one responded to my post regarding 'Holters' and I'd hate for the theme to just go away....Anyone?

However, in the interest of the original post I think the 'best' and 'famous' shouldn't be intermingled as a test of quality (or even collector value)!

Point being is a pre '43 General visor that 'quality wise' would out play any famous lable..The doeskin is like butter and the construction without flaw..and compared to an Erel General I have of 'Privat' quality the Erel doesn't come near this with the exception of its 'shape' which ofcourse you could have your hat maker steam for you!

My opinion is that if you had the $ you could BUY the finest of materials and devices etc. so suggesting that there was one 'BEST' maker might be a bit broad!

                      Dave
                      Regards,
                      Dave

There's a texture or quality difference in the material used...but most would opt for the 'popular' brand and kind of overlook the quality maker!
