I know it has been a few months since I originally posted pictures of this cap that the seller had supplied me, but the cap has finally arrived, so here are more pictures as promised.
At first glance it does appear by these pictures that the interior of the cap is extremely worn whereas the exterior is in much better shape. Since it is really difficult to get a feel for this without holding the cap in hand, I should point out the following observations on my part:
1) The interior lining of the cap was initially a brownish-gold color, but was also a somewhat coarse cotton material instead of silk. This in my opinion does help to make the interior appear even older or more worn than it really is.
2) The interior top of the cap does have old staining on it, and this has contributed to the discoloration of the interior a bit as well. The staining is consistant however, under the sweatshield and under the folds of the lining beneath the sweatband.
3) Other than staining and wear from "rubbing" on the interior edge of the sweatband, there really is not much wear to the cap.
4) The sweatband does look pretty bad, and it is, but I believe it is made worse because the material it is made of is now very dry and brittle. The sweatband actually tore and crumbled a bit as I lifted it for pictures. Obviously the seller and other previous owners probably did the same damage to it as well.
5) The folds of the interior lining beneath the sweatband are very pronounced and therefore have been folded that way for a very long time, and as I mentioned, the staining also makes this very clear.
6) Looking under the lining beneath the sweatband I do not see any evidence of loose material or clues that it was rebuilt. The felt material is very tight to the stiffener around the interior of the cap.
7) The exterior does have a few moth nips, some wear to the nap, and the evidence that a chincord had been attached at some point. Otherwise the exterior is in fairly good shape.
8) I do not think the cap was worn very much. This is evidenced by the lack of sweat stains on the sweatband interior, or and thumbwear marks on the brim. It may however have been in a previous collection where it was put on and off a mannequin head. It fit fairly snug on the mannequin head I placed it on for the pictures, so with the sweatband being as brittle as it is, this action would certainly have caused the type of damage evident on the sweatband.
With all that pointed out, I am eager to hear opinions from the people who know more about caps than I do, which is probably most of you.
Thank you in advance.
