Celluloid or plastic sweatshield?

Hi guys,

This is probably an easy one for you experienced collectors: How can you tell the difference between a (WW2) celluloid sweatshield and a (post-war) plastic one? Is celluloid more stiff and flat whereas plastic turns "bubbly" with age, or what?

Yes often the plastic will get that bubbly affect, it can also be very rigid in appearence as well as if often whitens as well, where celluloid stays clear.

Celluloid can yellow and split over time.

(As you probably know August Geiger of Kiel was in operation during both WW:s as well as afterwards, using similar logotypes...)

But if it's a plastic sweat diamond then it would be post-war and hence not KM, no? You might be out your SS cap?

It is the same thing as old 35mm negatives. It is brittle and not readily flexible.

It's probably an early Bundesmarine cap (with a KM badge loosely stitched to it's front) offered on German eBay (http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...=STRK:MEWAX:IT). Parts of it, like the peak, looks like they could be from WW2 stock. ?

That seems to be it alright. I guess Gebirgsjäger wins that SS cap after all. But who's going to pay him?
