I like it very much. A very early example obviously, and all the materials and constuction details are spot on for a cap of this period. Does it have any metal grommets in the top cover?

But, that red cloth behind the TK is pretty terrifying!

Real, but imho, not SS--I believe it is an Imperial visor for the Braunschweig Hussars, with the TR eagle and chinstrap added.

From Herr Lumsden's fine collection (Art, if you are reading this, sorry, I couldn't find my pic of yours):

I agree with Stonemint that the cap appears to be Imperial era with the TR insignia/strap added...when? who knows...the eagle certainly isn't early...

It could very well be an Imperial cap. I was trying to recal one in black with white piping but couldn't. Thanks gentlemen.

The only thing I'd say is that from what I've noticed, Imperial caps usualy have a narrower centreband, where as this is at least 50mm.

Does it have the vent holes?

I'm a bit slow tonight, sorry.

Check behind the skull, if you see a circular impression for a cockade, an Imperial cap is surely what it is.

I think Stonemint nailed this one.
Ever wonder why Braunschweig Husaren schirrmützen & krätzchen are so exceedingly scarce?
Most have been converted to SS caps.

17th Brunswick Hussars cap was actually black, with a red band, and yellow piping. The two Life Hussar Regiments both had black caps with white piping, but the 1st Regiment had a red band, with the 2nd all black.
It would seem the the 2nd Life Regiment would be the most likely to be "converted."
