    Last scan!!!. Any way this is an attempt to show how the piping goes into the back seam of the crown of the cap. If anyone has a Panzer Officer side cap that they know is a good one, could you please post it. There are variations, but it would be helpful to compare them.

      I want to retract all I said except the need to be cautious - but that is always a rule in dealing with these. I believe this cap is alright...and I apologize for the hasty conclusion from the first set of pictures. Now that you have shown the second set of scans and gave som emore detail, it looks every bit the original cap. I should not have called the brown piping unusual...the photos made the color look unusual (typing and mind were not in synch), but the pipng is OK....I am used to a bit darker piping here...again, probably just your lighting. I looked at several of my caps and the silver piping did in fact vary in width of the portion sewn on the inside flap...so what yours has is fine.. I think when you lay the cap flat the scallop tends to look flatter/straighter...I did this with several of mine to the same effect. when you show it upright and open, it shows the correct curve.

        I want to thank you for your comments and taking the time to look at the scans (I know these are not too professional, but I did the best with what I had). Hopefully, we can meet up at the SOS or I can send the cap to you to take a look at. These caps are difficult to call with pictures only and have to be inspected in hand. As you say, caution is the operative word here with these caps. I have primarily collected Heer tunics, caps and helmets and this is my only Panzer officer hat, so I appreciate the help. It is always nice to compare with others and unfortunately I have only seen real ones in books.

          Hi Marty,

          May I recommend the services of a good appraisor? This is a useful service if you have the right individual do the review. If interested, I know one in Canada who is first class - and, if the cap is pronounced good, can always be listed later on consignment on his site. The cost is not overly onerous.

            For me, scanning almost always turns out better than digital photos - but that is a function of one's equipment. Either way, I'd be happy to look at it...hope I can see you at the SOS.
            Be satisfied with this cap, regardless.

              Yes, let me know who you are talking about. I am not wanting to sell it, but it would be helpful to have an evaluation on paper as to authenticity for posterity. I think Bill Shea does this too as well as Detlev.

              Scott, I forgot to respond to your point about the brown reinforcement under the flap top edge. You are correct in that the lighting made the color of the brown look a lot lighter than it really is. The actual color is a dark brown, I'll call it chocolate brown.

The lining on mine is that grey twill, also with just a size stamping. Mine is near mint, with the soutache. Some wear and sweatstains inside, but that's about it. Look at the grommets on the vent holes, shouldn't be too shiny.

                    Chris, Thanks for the comments. The wool is relatively thin particularly when compared to replica PZ hats I have handled over the years. The wool is of high quality tight and dense), but I believe it is thin enough that you could almost tear it by hand if it were not for the seams that bind it together. Hope that makes sense. When examining tunics, hats, etc. I always use my fingers like calipers to gauge the thickness of the material. Unless the item is made from original material, ie cut up overcoats, etc. it is one test that I have found helpful.
